How Prince Ginseng Is Cultivated

Prince Ginseng cultivation is a seasonal, hands-on process. Understanding the cycle helps buyers interpret supplier claims and ask the right questions about a lot’s history. This overview follows the practice framework set out in the Chinese national standard GB/T 40136-2021 for Tai Zi Shen cultivation.

1. Land preparation

Plots are prepared in advance of planting: soil is tilled and ridged, and previous-crop rotation is planned to protect soil condition. In Shibing’s mountain terrain, plots are typically prepared on terraces and slopes with good drainage.

2. Planting

Propagation uses seed roots (seed tubers) rather than true seed in most commercial practice. Planting takes place in the cooler season, with tubers set in rows on the ridges. Seed-root quality directly affects the next generation’s vigour — which is why a separate standard, GB/T 40137-2021, governs seed and seed-root material.

3. Growth through winter and spring

The crop develops through the cool months and pushes into active growth in spring. Above-ground growth is modest — the commercial value accumulates underground in the tubers.

4. Field management

Between planting and harvest, the work is weeding, drainage management, and monitoring plant health. Under the standard framework, cultivation records are kept — field inputs, operations and observations — which later becomes part of a batch’s traceability story.

5. The run-up to harvest

By early summer the plants begin to wither above ground, signalling that tubers are maturing. Harvest timing is critical: dug too early, tubers are small and moist; left too long, quality can deteriorate in the ground during the hot, wet season.
